Compare Jpeg 2000 vs Jpeg

Download CodecWhat to compare Jpeg 2000 vs Jpeg? As I have written here the Jpeg 2000 format is not new, just not used as much as people do not really know about it. Below you can compare what happens to the picture quality of the Jpeg when it is converted and compressed.

Compare Jpeg 2000 vs Jpeg

Notice that is has until 2000 when the format came out only the scientific community used the Jpeg 2000 format. You can see the difference between the two pictures below which shows the Jpeg and Jpeg 2000 format. Notice how the picture does not compress well around the text on the picture. This is normal will Jpeg and Jpeg 2000 does a much better job at the pictures once saved and compressed. Notice that most browsers view the Jp2 standard as PNG.

You will note that both the JPEG and JPEG 2000 are both digital image compression standards. They do however use different methods in order to achieve their compression. Each standard has its benefits as well as its  short comings.

Firstly the JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a widely used compression standard that was already developed in the 1990s. This was one of the most commonly used formats. It is well known for compressing image files to small sizes while it has the ability to maintain high image quality. This made it and still makes it ideal for web and email applications.  You will however note that it uses a lossy compression technique. Some of the image information during compression is discarded. This lowers the image quality but makes a smaller image file.

JPEG 2000 image format

Enter the JPEG 2000 image format. This is a much newer compression standard developed in the early 2000s. This standard uses a wavelet-based compression technique. This is far more complex than the earlier standard. This algo is much more complex than the discrete cosine transform (DCT) which is used by JPEG. This standard now allows JPEG 2000 to achieve higher compression ratios than JPEG while maintaining better image quality. The images tend to be smoother as well as smaller. JPEG 2000 also has a range of advanced features such as scalability, region-of-interest coding, and support for lossless compression.

However, JPEG 2000 has not been widely adopted. Even thought is has been around for a while. Many web browsers and other image viewers can display JPEG images however offer very limited support for the JPEG 2000 standard. The complex compression algorithm used by JPEG 2000 requires more computing power. This to encode as well as to decode images,. This makes the standard a bit impractical. See also the features of Jpeg 2000 as well as the Jp2 image viewer and finally the article on the Jpeg2000 viewer for Windows 7.

Overall, JPEG is still the more widely used and supported image compression standard for general-purpose applications, but JPEG 2000 is a more advanced and powerful standard that is better suited for specific applications, particularly in fields where high image quality is essential. finally the compare video formats looks at different video formats.
